This weekend I partook in Greek Service Day. This day consisted of all the fraternities and sororities getting together and going about doing community service projects that were assigned to them. There were many different community service events going on that day, and no two groups went to the same place. The day began at 9 am and ended at 2 pm. It was a great way to get an easy five community service hours.
My group boarded a bus at 9 am and headed off to Lafayette to assist in a charity run/walk for the disabled. Upon arrival we assisted with blocking off the roads that the run was going to take place on. We stood there and made sure no cars entered the lane so that the runners could make their way around the track safely. After we did that for an hour we assisted with the assortment of games that they had set up for those that attended, both kids and adults. We assisted there for most of the day doing various activities and moving all over the place. Once the games drew to a close they had the awards ceremony. After the ceremony we helped clean up the plaza by picking up all the tables, breaking down the tents, packing up boxes, and moving cones. The day, overall was a great success on the part of the charity organization and all the volunteers involved.
I think that Greek Service Day is a great idea. There are so many Greek members and it is an easy way to get all these people to come volunteer. A volunteer group this large should most definitely be utilized way more often. It is such an effective way to get so much service done in one day and help out a lot of places that do not necessarily draw that many volunteers.
Hi Jason!
ReplyDeleteI completely agree that the Greek community should be utilized way more often for service! Sometimes the community gets a bad reputation via the media, but most everyone is fully willing to give at LEAST one day in service. I think it would be fun to do more service days and really get involved! We could even pair houses with organizations throughout the semester or for the day! I went to UIFI this summer and we did a mini Greek service day. It was so wonderful doing community service with other members who shared the same values and beliefs. My house also participated in the Boiler Volunteer Network’s Campus Community Service Day. It was so much fun to do this with sisters and it was a really good bonding experience. My sisters and I still talk about the day I ripped a tree out of the ground with my bare hands! I’m glad you had a wonderful experience and I hope that you are able to participate in more Greek Service Days!

Hey Jason!
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with your post! The Greek community here at Purdue is huge and we really should be doing more to help out everyone in need. I know that every house has it's own philanthropies and that is great but I really do think that we could be putting even MORE time and effort into making the world through the community that we have. But even so, what we are doing as a Greek community so far for the world is a great thing. I just went to DZ's turtle tug a week or so ago and it was so much fun! I think it's great that we can all get together for such good causes and raise money for things that are really important and help out so many people in need and still have fun while doing it!
